  • Distribution of star formation in galactic bars as seen in the S4G survey
The torques exerted by stellar bars are expected to provoke the flow of cold gas within the disk, driving the secular evolution of the inner parts of the galaxy, as established in simulation models since the last century. To date, it remains a matter of debate why the distribution of ionized gas along bars and in the circumnuclear regions varies

  • Downflowing umbral flashes as evidence of standing waves in sunspot umbrae
Context. Umbral flashes are sudden brightenings commonly visible in the core of some chromospheric lines. Theoretical and numerical modeling suggests that they are produced by the propagation of shock waves. According to these models and early observations, umbral flashes are associated with upflows. However, recent studies have reported umbral

  • First Scientific Results from HORuS and GTC
We present the first science results from the High Optical Resolution Spectrograph (HORuS), a cross-dispersed echelle spectrograph now in operation on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). The spectrograph provides a FWHM resolving power of 25,000 and coverage between 370 and 690 nm. HORuS has been mostly built with parts from a previous

  • Galaxy morphologies at 0.5 < z < 3 in the TNG50 hydrodynamic simulation
In this project we analyse the optical and structural properties of galaxies with redshifts (0.5 < z < 3.0) and more massive than 10 9 solar masses in the IllustrisTNG50 cosmological simulation. We use a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) trained on observed galaxies from the CANDELS survey. We include similar PSF and noise to the 11048 mock images

  • Introducing Inverse Problem Solvers in the 2.3 Release of the PHOEBE Eclipsing Binary Modeling Code
The development of PHOEBE (phoebe-project.org) in the 2.0 through 2.2 releases has focused entirely on the forward model — creating synthetic models of light curve and radial velocity curves of eclipsing binary systems. The recent 2.3 release turns this focus towards addressing the inverse problem with the goal of determining the best parameter
