  • Integral Field Spectroscopy of Planetary Nebulae with MUSE
The Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) is a large integral field unit mounted on the ESO Very Large Telescope. Its spatial (60 arcsecond field) and wavelength (4800-9300Å) coverage is well suited to detailed imaging spectroscopy of extended planetary nebulae, such as in the Galaxy. An overview of the capabilities of MUSE applied to Planetary

  • A prediction about the age of thick discs as a function of the stellar mass of the host galaxy
One of the suggested thick disc formation mechanisms is that they were born quickly and in situ from a turbulent clumpy disc. Subsequently, thin discs formed slowly within them from leftovers of the turbulent phase and from material accreted through cold flows and minor mergers. In this Letter, I propose an observational test to verify this

  • Atomic data for the Gaia-ESO Survey
Context. We describe the atomic and molecular data that were used for the abundance analyses of FGK-type stars carried out within the Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey in the years 2012 to 2019. The Gaia-ESO Survey is one among several current and future stellar spectroscopic surveys producing abundances for Milky-Way stars on an industrial

  • Classifying MaNGA galaxies with unsupervised machine learning techniques
We explore the use of unsupervised machine learning to classify a sample of >9000 nearby galaxies of all types from the SDSS MaNGA survey. Our aim is to find a classification that correlates with physical properties and that arises naturally when combining maps of the average properties of the stellar populations. We use the SimCLR (Simple

  • Cosmology and the massive photon frequency shift in the Standard-Model Extension
The total red shift z might be recast as a combination of the expansion red shift and a static shift due to the energy-momentum tensor non-conservation of a photon propagating through Electro-Magnetic (EM) fields. If massive, the photon may be described by the de Broglie-Proca (dBP) theory which satisfies the Lorentz(-Poincaré) Symmetry (LoSy) but
