  • Chemical Compositions of Field and Globular Cluster RR Lyrae Stars. II. ω Centauri
We present a detailed spectroscopic analysis of RR Lyrae (RRL) variables in the globular cluster NGC 5139 (ω Cen). We collected optical (4580–5330 Å), high-resolution (R ∼ 34,000), high signal-to-noise ratio (∼200) spectra for 113 RRLs with the multifiber spectrograph M2FS at the Magellan/Clay Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. We also analyzed

  • Constraining nuclear star cluster formation using MUSE-AO observations of the early-type galaxy FCC 47
Context. Nuclear star clusters (NSCs) are found in at least 70% of all galaxies, but their formation path is still unclear. In the most common scenarios, NSCs form in-situ from the galaxy's central gas reservoir, through the merging of globular clusters (GCs), or through a combination of both. Aims: As the scenarios pose different expectations for

  • Do AGN triggering mechanisms vary with radio power? - I. Optical morphologies of radio-intermediate HERGs
Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with intermediate radio powers are capable of driving multiphase outflows in galaxy bulges, and are also more common than their high-radio-power counterparts. In-depth characterization of the typical host galaxies and likely triggering mechanisms for this population is therefore required in order to better understand

  • Enduring Sacred Places: The Astronomical Orientation of the Iberian Cave-Sanctuary of Cueva Santa del Cabriel in Spain
This paper presents the results of an archaeoastronomical study of the Iberian Iron Age cave-sanctuary of Cueva Santa del Cabriel, near the town of Mira in the province of Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha, central Spain, together with a review of the latest archaeological and ethnographical data about the site. We found that the cave's 12 m-long access

  • Exoplanet atmospheres at high spectral resolution with CARMENES
Transmission spectroscopy using high-resolution spectrographs is quickly becoming a major tool to detect and understand planetary atmospheres, from ultra hot Jupiters to Neptunes-size planets. The CARMENES spectrograph started operations in 2016, and since then we have been using it for the study of planetary atmospheres taking advantage of it

  • Formation of ultra-diffuse galaxies in the field and in galaxy groups
We study ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in zoom in cosmological simulations, seeking the origin of UDGs in the field versus galaxy groups. We find that while field UDGs arise from dwarfs in a characteristic mass range by multiple episodes of supernova feedback (Di Cintio et al.), group UDGs may also form by tidal puffing up and they become quiescent
