  • Rise of the Titans: Unveiling the Nature of a Binary Hyper-Luminous Starburst at Redshift 6
We propose HST/WFC3-IR and ACS observations in 3 bands to characterize the nature and the environment of ADFS-27, the most distant binary hyper-luminous starburst known, at a redshift of 5.655. This rare, gas-rich (Mgas 2.5x10^11Msun), dusty starburst (SFR 2500Msun/yr) system was recently discovered with ALMA and Herschel. It consists of two

  • Toluene pyrolysis in an electric ARC: Products analysis
Toluene pyrolysis in a submerged carbon arc produced at least 72 different molecular species as detected by gas-chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The most abundant products found were bibenzyl (1,2-diphenylethane), naphthalene and biphenylene. Furthermore, also diethynylbenzene isomers, fluorene, diphenymethane, indene and

  • Tracing the 6-D Orbital and Formation History of the Complete M31 Satellite System
The Milky Way (MW) halo has long been the local testing ground for the nature of dark matter, cosmic reionization, and for understanding key physics of galaxy formation. However, there is increasing evidence that the MW halo is not broadly representative. Here, we propose to image the entire M31 satellite system in order to establish a second local

  • 10- to 19.5-GHz microwave receiver of an electro-optical interferometer for radio astronomy
This document describes the analysis, design, and prototype test results of the microwave section of a 10- to 19.5-GHz interferometer, aimed at obtaining polarization data of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation from the sky. First, receiver analysis is thoroughly assessed to study the contribution of each subsystem when obtaining the Stokes

  • A New Near-IR C2 Linelist for an Improved Chemical Analysis of Hydrogen-deficient, Carbon-rich Giants
Diatomic carbon (C2) is ubiquitous in astronomical environments, from comets and stars to translucent clouds and the interstellar medium. In particular, the C2 bands (mainly the Ballik-Ramsay and Phillips transitions) are an important source of opacity in the near-IR region of carbon stars such as the hydrogen deficient carbon-rich (HdC) or R

  • A steep bandpass interference filter with FWHM 11nm centered at 1254nm for studying Lyman Alpha signatures of highly redshifted galaxies
The presented new 1% narrowband filter centered at 1254nm with a FWHM of 11nm required and achieved excellent maximum transmission and deep out of band blocking. Magnetron sputtering was used for the filter coating process. The filter was used in the fully cryogenic near-infrared camera CIRCE of the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) Telescope. The
