  • The Lines are Not Fine: Measuring Vanadium Abundances in M dwarfs from Hyperfine-Split Lines
Cool star atmospheres present challenges to chemical abundance studies. To date, only a handful of elements have been quantified for a handful of M dwarfs. In high-resolution spectra from the CARMENES survey, we identify a series of dramatically hyperfine-split vanadium features between 800 and 910 nm, which have strong and clean profiles

  • The 99942 Apophis observational campaign at the Canary Islands observatories during its 2021 close approach: preliminary results
Potentially hazardous asteroid (PHA) 99942 Apophis, with a diameter 380-393 m (Licandro et al. 2016), came to its 2021 close approach on March 6, 2021, at 01:06 UT. It approached at 0.1126 au from Earth, providing an excellent opportunity to obtain good data to do a detailed study of its physical properties. The Solar System Group of the Instituto

  • A New View of the Solar Interface Region from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS)
The Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) has been obtaining near- and far-ultraviolet images and spectra of the solar atmosphere since July 2013. IRIS is the highest resolution observatory to provide seamless coverage of spectra and images from the photosphere into the low corona. The unique combination of near- and far-ultraviolet spectra

  • A transmission spectrum of the planet candidate WD 1856+534 b and a lower limit to its mass
The cool white dwarf WD 1856+534 was found to be transited by a Jupiter-sized object with a mass at or below 14 M Jup. We used the GTC telescope to obtain and analyse the photometry and low-resolution spectroscopy of six transits of WD 1856+534 b, with the intention of deriving the slope of the transmission spectrum. Such a slope, assuming a cloud

  • Chemodynamically Characterizing the Jhelum Stellar Stream with APOGEE-2
We present the kinematic and chemical profiles of red giant stars observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE)-2 survey in the direction of the Jhelum stellar stream, a Milky Way substructure located in the inner halo of the Milky Way at a distance from the Sun of ≍13 kpc. From the six APOGEE-2 Jhelum pointings

  • Evidence for TiO in the Atmosphere of the Hot Jupiter HAT-P-65 b
We present the low-resolution transmission spectra of the puffy hot Jupiter HAT-P-65b (0.53 M Jup, 1.89 R Jup, T eq = 1930 K), based on two transits observed using the OSIRIS spectrograph on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS. The transmission spectra of the two nights are consistent, covering the wavelength range 517-938 nm and consisting of
