  • Disentangling jet and disc emission from the 2005 outburst of XTE J1118+480
The black hole X-ray transient, XTE J1118+480, has now twice been observed in outbursts - 2000 and 2005 - and on both occasions remained in the low/hard X-ray spectral state. Here we present radio, infrared, optical, soft X-ray and hard X-ray observations of the more recent outburst. We find that the light curves have very different morphologies

  • Discovery of a Second Transient Low-Mass X-ray Binary in the Globular Cluster Ngc 6440
We have discovered a new transient low-mass X-ray binary, NGC 6440 X-2, with Chandra/ACIS, RXTE/PCA, and Swift/XRT observations of the globular cluster NGC 6440. The discovery outburst (2009 July 28-31) peaked at LX ~ 1.5 × 1036 erg s-1 and lasted for 21, B>22 in quiescence from archival Hubble Space Telescope imaging, g'>22 during the August

  • Comparison Of Observations And Advanced Numerical Simulations Of Type II Spicules
We have performed realistic 3D radiation MHD simulations of the solar atmosphere. These simulations show jet-like features that are similar to the type II spicules discovered with Hinode's Solar Optical Telescope. These type II spicules have been associated with so-called rapid blueshifted events (RBE's) on the solar disk, and with significant

  • Commission 36: Theory of Stellar Atmospheres
The members of the Commission 36 Organizing Committee attending the IAU General Assembly in Rio de Janeiro met for a business session on August 7. Both members from the previous (2006-2009) and the new (2009-2012) Organizing Committee partook in the discussions. Past president John Landstreet described the work he had done over the past three years
