  • Cosmic rays linked to rapid mid-latitude cloud changes
The effect of the Galactic Cosmic Ray (GCR) flux on Earth's climate is highly uncertain. Using a novel sampling approach based around observing periods of significant cloud changes, a statistically robust relationship is identified between short-term GCR flux changes and the most rapid mid-latitude (60°-30° N/S) cloud decreases operating over daily

  • Constraining the regular Galactic magnetic field with the 5-year WMAP polarization measurements at 22 GHz
Context. The knowledge of the regular (large scale) component of the Galactic magnetic field gives important information about the structure and dynamics of the Milky Way, and also constitutes a basic tool to determine cosmic ray trajectories. It can also provide clear windows where primordial magnetic fields could be detected. Aims: We aim to

  • Cold dust and young starbursts: spectral energy distributions of Herschel SPIRE sources from the HerMES survey
We present spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for 68 Herschel sources detected at 5σ at 250, 350 and 500 μm in the HerMES SWIRE-Lockman field. We explore whether existing models for starbursts, quiescent star-forming galaxies and active galactic nucleus dust tori are able to model the full range of SEDs measured with Herschel. We find that while

  • Characterisation of extrasolar planetary transit candidates. II. The companions to late M-type stars
We present a second paper of a complete characterization of stars whose low-depth transits were discovered by the OGLE-III campaign to select the most promising candidates for spectroscopic confirmation. This paper follows a similar analysis to one previously performed in Gallardo et al. (2005, A&A, 431, 707). We present new optical and near-IR

  • Bright Points in the Quiet Sun as Observed in the Visible and Near-UV by the Balloon-borne Observatory SUNRISE
Bright points (BPs) are manifestations of small magnetic elements in the solar photosphere. Their brightness contrast not only gives insight into the thermal state of the photosphere (and chromosphere) in magnetic elements, but also plays an important role in modulating the solar total and spectral irradiance. Here, we report on simultaneous high
