  • A Survey of the Interstellar Medium in Early-Type Galaxies. III. Stellar and Gas Kinematics
We present gaseous and stellar kinematics for 14 gas-rich early-type galaxies. Half of the sample exhibit irregular gaseous velocity profiles; gas/star counter-rotation is visible in five galaxies. We also find five counter-rotating stellar cores, while five more galaxies display inner components kinematically decoupled from the main stellar body

  • A search for planetary nebulae in M33
We searched for planetary nebulae (PNe) in the nearby spiral galaxy M33 using the Wide Field Camera at the 2.54 m Isaac Newton Telescope of La Palma (Spain). Images in the [O iii] nebular line at lambda 5007Ä, in the Hα +[N ii] lines around 6560 Ä, and in the continuum around 5550Ä allowed us to detect a large number of emission line objects. Among

  • The ionized gas in the spiral galaxy NGC 3359. I. Photometry
We combine Hα imaging and broad-band optical and NIR imaging over the face of the barred galaxy NGC 3359, obtained within the BARS program on the Canary Island telescopes. From the Hα image we have determined the positions, fluxes, and diameters of a total of 547 Hii regions, and computed their luminosity function, whose slope is within the range

  • The cosmic evolution of Starburst galaxies and AGN from the largest ISO survey
The huge improvement in sensitivity provided by the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) offered the opportunity to probe the galaxy population to higher redshift than the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) and to make progress in understanding the obscured star-formation history (SFH) of the Universe. • Spectroscopy of globular cluster candidates in the Sculptor group galaxies NGC 253 and 55
We have obtained spectra for 103 published globular cluster candidates in the Sculptor group galaxies NGC 253 and 55. On the basis of radial velocities and digitized plate images, 14 globular clusters are identified in NGC 253 and one probable globular cluster is identified in NGC 55. The majority of the objects in the sample appear to be

  • Non-LTE Inversion of Stokes Profiles Induced by the Zeeman Effect
This paper presents a new diagnostic tool for the inference of the thermal, dynamic, and magnetic properties of the solar chromosphere. It consists of a non-LTE inversion code of Stokes profiles induced by the Zeeman effect in magnetized stellar atmospheres. This code is the generalization, to the non-LTE Stokes transfer case, of the inversion code
