  • Remarkable Disk and Off-Nuclear Starburst Activity in the Tadpole Galaxy as revealed by the Spitzer Space Telescope
We present ground-based optical and Spitzer Space Telescope infrared imaging observations of the interacting galaxy UGC 10214, the Tadpole galaxy (z=0.0310), focusing on the star formation activity in the nuclear, disk, spiral arms, and tidal tail regions. The ground-based optical data set spans a wavelength range between 0.3 and 0.8 μm, the near

  • Recent star formation in UCM galaxies (Perez-Gonzalez+, 2003)
We present the integrated properties of the stellar populations in the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) Survey galaxies. Applying the techniques described in the first paper of this series (Perez-Gonzalez et al., 2003, Cat. ), we derive ages, burst masses and metallicities of the newly formed stars in our sample galaxies. • Polytropes as simple models of beta Cephei stars
Beta Cephei stars have a simple structure: a convective core surrounded by a radiative envelope. It is therefore worth trying to describe beta Cephei stars with composite polytropes which are useful to retrieve structure parameters from frequency spectra. We show that the structure of beta Cephei models can relatively well be described with two

  • Oxygen abundances in planet-harbouring stars. Comparison of different abundance indicators
We present a detailed and uniform study of oxygen abundances in 155 solar type stars, 96 of which are planet hosts and 59 of which form part of a volume-limited comparison sample with no known planets. EW measurements were carried out for the [O I] 6300 Å line and the O I triplet, and spectral synthesis was performed for several OH lines. NLTE

  • On the origin of the absorption features in SS433
We present high-resolution optical spectroscopy of the X-ray binary system SS433, obtained over a wide range of orbital phases. The spectra display numerous weak absorption features, and include the clearest example seen to date of those features (resembling a mid-A type supergiant spectrum), which have previously been associated with the mass

  • On the nitrogen abundance of fast, low-ionization emission regions: the outer knots of the planetary nebula NGC 7009
We have constructed a 3D photoionization model of a planetary nebula (PN) similar in structure to NGC 7009 with its outer pair of knots (also known as FLIERs - fast, low-ionization emission regions). The work is motivated by the fact that the strong [NII]λ6583 line emission from FLIERs in many PNe has been attributed to a significant local
