  • Theory and Modeling of the Zeeman and Paschen-Back Effects in Molecular Lines
This paper describes a very general approach to the calculation of the Zeeman splitting effect produced by an external magnetic field on the rotational levels of diatomic molecules. The method is valid for arbitrary values of the total electronic spin and of the magnetic field strength-that is, it holds for molecular electronic states of any

  • The Wendelstein Calar Alto Pixellensing Project (WeCAPP): the M 31 variable star catalogue
In this paper we present the WeCAPP catalogue of variable stars found in the bulge of M 31. Observations in the WeCAPP microlensing survey (optical R and I bands) for a period of three years (2000-2003) resulted in a database with unprecedented time coverage for an extragalactic variable star study. We detected 23781 variable sources in a 16.1

  • The Ultraluminous X-ray Source IC 342 X-1 and its Environment
We present optical observations of a ULX in the nearby spiral galaxy IC 342. This variable source has an average X-ray luminosity of some 10^{40} erg/s. At the position of the source there is an ionized nebula (the "Tooth") having huge dimensions (280 x 130 pc), much larger than normal supernova remnants. Our optical spectra reveal highly

  • The triple-mode pulsating variable V823 Cassiopeiae
Using extended multicolour CCD photometry of the triple-mode radial pulsator V823 Cas we studied the properties of the coupling frequencies invoked by nonlinear processes. Our results support that a resonance connection affects the mode coupling behaviour. The P1/P0 period ratio of V823 Cas has an “out of range” value if compared with the period

  • The spin-foam-representation of loop quantum gravity
The problem of background independent quantum gravity is the problem of defining a quantum field theory of matter and gravity in the absence of an underlying background geometry. Loop quantum gravity (LQG) is a promising proposal for addressing this difficult task. Despite the steady progress of the field, dynamics remains to a large extend an open
