  • Habla con Ellas: Mujeres en Astronomía
Physics and Engineering are areas that continue to be perceived by society as "male professions" and in which women are still under-represented. In 2017, a group of female colleagues from the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) began to meet with the aim of co-creating activities that would contribute to changing gender stereotypes in these

  • Historical Perspectives on the Concept of Galaxy Size
A brief narrative on how the effective radius and isophotal diameters were accepted as galaxy size measures is presented. Evidence suggests that these parameters were defined only based on observational premises, independent of any astrophysical theories. An alternative, new physically motivated size definition based on the expected gas density

  • HORuS higher resolution for GTC
The High Optical Resolution Spectrograph (HORus) has been available on the 10-m GTC telescope since early 2019. Based largely on optical elements reused from UES, in operation on the 4-m WHT in the 90s, HORuS provides a resolving power of 25,000 with nearly complete coverage in the range 380-700 nm. This instrument gives a signal-to-noise ratio at

  • I had peanuts at the little bar!
Presenting the first detection of a peanut structure in the inner bar of a double-barred system! Peanuts are formed after the buckling of stellar bars. Having peanuts in inner bars suggests they are long-lived structures, analogous to regular bars... thus solving the long debate about the nature of double bars.

  • Linking stellar populations and kinematics in nuclear discs of nearby galaxies of the MUSE TIMER project
We use IFS data of four galaxies from the TIMER survey to explore the kinematics measured in different spectral regions that are sensitive to distinct stellar populations. We derive the velocity and velocity dispersion of both a young and an old stellar population and several stellar parameters. We report a correlation of the mean luminosity

  • Local dynamo in stars beyond the Sun: Study for a K0V star
We present the first results of application of the MANCHA3D code (Felipe 2010; Khomenko et al. 2017, 2018) to a K0V cool star. Initially we run the code solving purely hydrodynamic equations until the stationary convection is reached. Then we produce the magnetic field generation and amplification by Biermann's battery seed and local dynamo. We
