  • Two Bright M Dwarfs Hosting Ultra-Short-Period Super-Earths with Earth-like Compositions
    We present observations of two bright M dwarfs (TOI-1634 and TOI-1685: J = 9.5-9.6) hosting ultra-short-period (USP) planets identified by the TESS mission. The two stars are similar in temperature, mass, and radius (T eff ≍ 3500 K, M ⋆ ≍ 0.45-0.46 M ⊙, and R ⋆ ≍ 0.45-0.46 R ⊙), and the planets are both super-Earth size (1.25 R ⊕ < R p < 2.0 R ⊕)

  • A new radio census of neutron star X-ray binaries
We report new radio observations of a sample of 36 neutron star (NS) X-ray binaries, more than doubling the sample in the literature observed at current-day sensitivities. These sources include 13 weakly magnetized (B < 10 10 G) and 23 strongly magnetized (B ≥ 10 10 G) NSs. 16 of the latter category reside in high-mass X-ray binaries, of which only

  • Correcting the effect of stellar spots on ARIEL transmission spectra - II. The limb-darkening effect
This paper is part of an effort to correct the transmission spectra of a transiting planet orbiting an active star. In Paper I (Cracchiolo, Micela & Peres 2020), we have demonstrated a methodology to minimize the potential bias induced by unocculted star spots on the transmission spectrum, assuming a spot model parametrized by filling factor and

  • Determining the full satellite population of a Milky Way-mass halo in a highly resolved cosmological hydrodynamic simulation
We investigate the formation of the satellite galaxy population of a Milky Way-mass halo in a very highly resolved magnetohydrodynamic cosmological zoom-in simulation (baryonic mass resolution m b = 800 $\rm M_{\odot }$). We show that the properties of the central star-forming galaxy, such as the radial stellar surface density profile and star

  • Failed-transition outbursts in black hole low-mass X-ray binaries
Black hole low-mass X-ray binaries (BH LMXBs) evolve in a similar way during outburst. Based on the X-ray spectrum and variability, this evolution can be divided into three canonical states: low/hard, intermediate, and high/soft state. BH LMXBs evolve from the low/hard to the high/soft state through the intermediate state in some outbursts (here

  • Optical detection of the rapidly spinning white dwarf in V1460 Her
Accreting magnetic white dwarfs offer an opportunity to understand the interplay between spin-up and spin-down torques in binary systems. Monitoring of the white dwarf spin may reveal whether the white dwarf spin is currently in a state of near-equilibrium, or of unidirectional evolution towards longer or shorter periods, reflecting the recent
