  • Heavy Element Abundances in Magellanic Cloud Planetary Nebulae
We present an analysis of the heavy element compositions of the Magellanic Cloud planetary nebulae (PNe) SMP 29, SMP 73, and SMP 99 in the LMC, and SMC SMP 13, based on high-resolution near-infrared spectra. The observations were conducted with IGRINS (Park et al. 2014, SPIE, 9147, 91471D), a high-resolution (R = 45,000) H and K band spectrometer

  • Granulation, Metallicity, and Red Giants
We explore the metallicity dependence of granulation parameters for thousands of red giants observed with Kepler, and find a significant dependence of granulation amplitudes with metallicity. NASA's Kepler mission has observed almost 200,000 stars during its nominal operation, including more than 20,000 red giants with solar-like oscillations. We

  • GJ 367b: A dense, ultrashort-period sub-Earth planet transiting a nearby red dwarf star
Ultrashort-period (USP) exoplanets have orbital periods shorter than 1 day. Precise masses and radii of USP exoplanets could provide constraints on their unknown formation and evolution processes. We present the work from Lam et al. 2021 (Science, 374, 1271) and report the detection and characterization of the USP planet GJ 367b using high

  • Generalized Fluid Models of the Braginskii Type
Several generalizations of the well-known fluid model of Braginskii (1965) are considered. We use the Landau collisional operator and the moment method of Grad. We focus on the 21-moment model that is analogous to the Braginskii model, and we also consider a 22-moment model. Both models are formulated for general multispecies plasmas with arbitrary

  • Galactic angular momentum in the IllustrisTNG simulation - I. Connection to morphology, halo spin, and black hole mass
We use the TNG100 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project to investigate the stellar specific angular momenta (j *) of ~12 000 central galaxies at z = 0 in a full cosmological context, with stellar masses (M *) ranging from 10 9 to $10^{12} \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$. We find that the j *-M * relations for early-type and late-type galaxies in IllustrisTNG

  • Fundamental physics with ESPRESSO: Constraints on Bekenstein and dark energy models from astrophysical and local probes*
Dynamical scalar fields in an effective four-dimensional field theory are naturally expected to couple to the rest of the theory's degrees of freedom, unless some new symmetry is postulated to suppress these couplings. In particular, a coupling to the electromagnetic sector will lead to spacetime variations of the fine-structure constant, α
