  • A catalogue of accurate wavelengths in the optical spectrum of the Sun
We present accurate measurements of the central wavelengths of 4947 atomic absorption lines in the solar optical spectrum. The wavelengths, precise to a level ~ 50-150 m s(-1) , are given for both flux and disc-centre spectra, as measured in relatively recent FTS solar atlases. This catalogue modernizes existing sources based on photographic

  • Two-dimensional Spectroscopy Reveals an Arc of Extended Emission in the Gravitational Lens System Q2237+0305
We present two-dimensional spectroscopy of the gravitational lens system Q2237+0305 (Einstein Cross) obtained with the INTEGRAL fiber system in subarcsecond seeing conditions. The four components of the system appear clearly separated in the continuum intensity maps. However, the intensity map of the C III] lambda 1909 line exhibits an arc of

  • The structure of the interstellar gas towards stars in the globular cluster NGC 6541
Observations are presented of high resolution interstellar Na I D and K I (lambda 7699 Angstroms) line profiles towards 7 stars in the globular cluster NGC 6541 and 3 field stars within 3° of the cluster. It is seen that the gas in this general direction (l, b ~ 350°, -11°) shows a complex structure, having the greatest number of components yet

  • The Rapid Decay of the Optical Emission from GRB 980326 and Its Possible Implications
We report the discovery of the optical counterpart to GRB 980326. Its rapid optical decay can be characterized by a power law with exponent - 2.10+/-0.13 and a constant underlying source at R_{{c}}=25.5+/-0.5 . Its optical colors 2.1 days after the burst imply a spectral slope of - 0.66+/-0.70 . The gamma -ray spectrum as observed with BATSE shows
