  • The star formation history of Leo I
We present results on the star formation history of the Local Group dSph galaxy Leo I, obtained through the analysis of its deep HST color-magnitude diagram (CMD) using model CMDs computed from stellar evolutionary models. Our results show unambiguously that Leo I experienced a major increase of its star formation rate from about 6 Gyr ago to 2 Gyr

  • The nature of arms in spiral galaxies. III. Azimuthal profiles
In this paper we analyse the structure of a small sample of galaxies using a set of CCD images in standard photometric bands presented in a previous paper (del Rio & Cepa 1998a, hereafter cite{p2}). The galaxies are NGC 157, 753, 895, 4321, 6764, 6814, 6951, 7479 and 7723, and the selected bands were B and I. Seven galaxies are grand design, i.e

  • The density and shock characteristics of NGC 2818
We report the results of narrow band imaging of the bipolar outflow source NGC 2818 in transitions of [NII], [OIII], [SII], and HI. As a consequence, we are able to assess the overall excitation properties of the shell, and determine that line ratios towards the nebular periphery are anomalous, and characteristic of planar shocks with velocity V_s

  • Surface Inhomogeneities and Semi-Empirical Modeling of Metal-Poor Stellar Photospheres
The interpretation of detailed spectroscopic observations of different stars reveals inconsistencies, due likely to inadequacies of the underlying hypothesis. The high accuracy of the parallaxes measured by the Hipparcos satellite established a firm reference frame that is used here to test theoretical classical model atmospheres for cool stars

  • Steps toward Determination of the Size and Structure of the Broad-Line Region in Active Galactic Nuclei. XIII. Ultraviolet Observations of the Broad-Line Radio Galaxy 3C 390.3
As part of an extensive multiwavelength monitoring campaign, the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite was used to observe the broad-line radio galaxy 3C 390.3 during the period 1994 December 31-1996 March 5. Spectra were obtained every 6-10 days. The UV continuum varied by a factor of 7 through the campaign, while the broad emission lines

  • Soft X-ray transient light curves as standard candles: exponential versus linear decays
A recent paper by King & Ritter proposed that the light curves of soft X-ray transients (SXTs) are dominated by the effect of irradiation of the accretion disc by the central X-rays. This prevents the onset of the cooling wave which would otherwise return the disc to the quiescent state, and so prolongs the outbursts beyond those in dwarf nova
