  • Far-infrared properties of submillimeter and optically faint radio galaxies
We use deep observations obtained with the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) onboard the Herschel Space Observatory to study the far-infrared (FIR) properties of submillimeter and optically faint radio galaxies (SMGs and OFRGs). From literature we compiled a sample of 35 securely identified SMGs and nine OFRGs located in the GOODS

  • Expected performance and simulated observations of the instrument HARMONI at the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT)
HARMONI has been conceived as a workhorse visible and near-infrared (0.47-2.45 microns) integral field spectrograph for the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). It provides both seeing and diffraction limited observations at several spectral resolutions (R= 4000, 10000, 20000). HARMONI can operate with almost any flavor of AO (e.g. GLAO

  • Evidence for a compact jet dominating the broad-band spectrum of the black hole accretor XTE J1550-564
The black hole X-ray binary XTE J1550-564 was monitored extensively at X-ray, optical and infrared wavelengths throughout its outburst in 2000. We show that it is possible to separate the optical/near-infrared (OIR) jet emission from the OIR disc emission. Focussing on the jet component, we find that as the source fades in the X-ray hard state, the

  • European Solar Telescope: project status
The European Solar Telescope is a project for a 4-meter class telescope to be located in the Canary Islands. EST is promoted by the European Association for Solar Telescopes (EAST). This is a consortium formed by a number of research organizations from fifteen European countries (Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy

  • ESPRESSO: the Echelle spectrograph for rocky exoplanets and stable spectroscopic observations
ESPRESSO, the Echelle SPectrograph for Rocky Exoplanets and Stable Spectroscopic Observations, will combine the efficiency of modern echelle spectrograph design with extreme radial-velocity precision. It will be installed on ESO's VLT in order to achieve a gain of two magnitudes with respect to its predecessor HARPS, and the instrumental

  • ESPRESSO: projecting a rocky exoplanet hunter for the VLT
ESPRESSO is a high-resolution, highly stable spectrograph for the VLT. It will inherit and enhance most capabilities from HARPS and UVES, combining both stability and efficiency. The main science driver will be the detection and characterization of Earth-like planets, but many additional science cases will benefit from its highly stable
