  • GALAXIES WITH MULTIPLE BARS: CONSTRAINTS ON THEIR FORMATION SCENARIOS
Much of current astrophysical research is aimed at addressing one key issue: how galaxies form and evolve. We still do not fully understand the evolutionary processes driving the lifetimes of the zoo of galaxies which populate the Universe. Galaxies may be isolated, or in groups or clusters; they may appear as pure ellipsoids or discs or include a

  • WEAVE: the next generation wide-field spectroscopy facility for the William Herschel Telescope
We present the preliminary design of the WEAVE next generation spectroscopy facility for the William Herschel Telescope (WHT), principally targeting optical ground-based follow up of upcoming ground-based (LOFAR) and spacebased (Gaia) surveys. WEAVE is a multi-object and multi-IFU facility utilizing a new 2 degree prime focus field of view at the

  • Very Low Mass Stellar and Substellar Companions to Solar-like Stars from MARVELS. II. A Short-period Companion Orbiting an F Star with Evidence of a Stellar Tertiary and Significant Mutual Inclination
We report the discovery via radial velocity (RV) measurements of a short-period (P = 2.430420 ± 0.000006 days) companion to the F-type main-sequence star TYC 2930-00872-1. A long-term trend in the RV data also suggests the presence of a tertiary stellar companion with P > 2000 days. High-resolution spectroscopy of the host star yields T eff = 6427

  • Variability of the blazar 4C 38.41 (B3 1633+382) from GHz frequencies to GeV energies
Context. After years of modest optical activity, the quasar-type blazar 4C 38.41 (B3 1633+382) experienced a large outburst in 2011, which was detected throughout the entire electromagnetic spectrum, renewing interest in this source. Aims: We present the results of low-energy multifrequency monitoring by the GLAST-AGILE Support Program (GASP) of

  • Two-dimensional metallicity distribution of the ionized gas in NGC 628 and NGC 6946
Aims: We present here two H II region catalogues with azimuthal resolution for the two grand design galaxies NGC 628 and NGC 6946. With the help of these catalogues, we study several properties of the star-forming processes occurring in spiral galaxies. Methods: We obtained direct imaging in the narrow-band filters centred at Hα, Hβ, [O II]λ3727

  • Transiting exoplanets from the CoRoT space mission. XXIII. CoRoT-21b: a doomed large Jupiter around a faint subgiant star
CoRoT-21, a F8IV star of magnitude V = 16 mag, was observed by the space telescope CoRoT during the Long Run 01 (LRa01) in the first winter field (constellation Monoceros) from October 2007 to March 2008. Transits were discovered during the light curve processing. Radial velocity follow-up observations, however, were performed mainly by the 10-m
