  • The Search for Type 1 X-ray Bursts with Fermi/GBM
We discuss the first results of the Fermi-GBM all-sky search for X-ray bursts. The very large field of view and X-ray response of the Fermi-GBM make it a unique instrument to study rare, bright and short-lived X-ray bursts. We are performing a systematic search that exploits such capabilities. We present results on long/intermediate type I X-ray

  • The SAURON project - XX. The Spitzer [3.6] - [4.5] colour in early-type galaxies: colours, colour gradients and inverted scaling relations
We investigate the [3.6]-[4.5] Spitzer-IRAC colour behaviour of the early-type galaxies of the SAURON survey, a representative sample of 48 nearby ellipticals and lenticulars. We investigate how this colour, which is unaffected by dust extinction, can be used to constrain the stellar populations in these galaxies. We find a tight relation between

  • The Orientation of Disk Galaxies around Large Cosmic Voids
Using a large sample of galaxies from the the seventh data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-DR7), we have analyzed the alignment of disk galaxies around cosmic voids. We have constructed a complete sample of cosmic voids (devoid of galaxies brighter than Mr - 5log h = -20.17) with radii larger than 10 h -1 Mpc up to redshift 0.12. Disk

  • The intriguing H I gas in NGC 5253: an infall of a diffuse, low-metallicity H I cloud?
We present new, deep H I line and 20-cm radio-continuum data of the very puzzling blue compact dwarf galaxy NGC 5253, obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array as part of the 'Local Volume H I Survey' (LVHIS). Our low-resolution H I maps show, for the first time, the disturbed H I morphology that NGC 5253 possesses, including tails
