  • The Carina Project. VI. The Helium-burning Variable Stars
We present new optical (BVI) time-series data for the evolved variable stars in the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The quality of the data and the observing strategy allowed us to identify 14 new variable stars. Eight out of the 14 are RR Lyrae (RRL) stars, 4 are Anomalous Cepheids (ACs), and 2 are geometrical variables. Comparison of the period

  • The ALHAMBRA survey: Discovery of a faint QSO at z = 5.41
Aims: We aim to illustrate the potentiality of the Advanced Large, Homogeneous Area, Medium-Band Redshift Astronomical (ALHAMBRA) survey to investigate the high-redshift universe through the detection of quasi stellar objects (QSOs) at redshifts higher than 5. Methods: We searched for QSOs candidates at high redshift by fitting an extensive library

  • Short-duration high-amplitude flares detected on the M dwarf star KIC 5474065
Using data obtained during the RATS-Kepler project, we identified one short-duration flare in a 1 h sequence of ground-based photometry of the dwarf star KIC 5474065. Observations made using Gran Telescopio Canarias show that it is a star with an M4V spectral type. Kepler observations made using 1 min sampling show that KIC 5474065 exhibits large

  • Resolving galaxies in time and space. I. Applying STARLIGHT to CALIFA datacubes
Aims: Fossil record methods based on spectral synthesis techniques have matured during the past decade, and their application to integrated galaxy spectra has fostered substantial advances in the understanding of galaxies and their evolution. Yet, because of the lack of spatial resolution, these studies are limited to a global view, providing no

  • PORTA: A three-dimensional multilevel radiative transfer code for modeling the intensity and polarization of spectral lines with massively parallel computers
The interpretation of the intensity and polarization of the spectral line radiation produced in the atmosphere of the Sun and of other stars requires solving a radiative transfer problem that can be very complex, especially when the main interest lies in modeling the spectral line polarization produced by scattering processes and the Hanle and

  • Planck intermediate results. XII: Diffuse Galactic components in the Gould Belt system
We perform an analysis of the diffuse low-frequency Galactic components in the southern part of the Gould Belt system (130° ≤ l ≤ 230° and -50° ≤ b ≤ -10°). Strong ultra-violet flux coming from the Gould Belt super-association is responsible for bright diffuse foregrounds that we observe from our position inside the system and that can help us
