  • J-PAS: The Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerated Universe Astrophysical Survey
J-PAS is a Spanish-Brazilian 8500 deg^2 Cosmological Survey which will be carried out from the Javalambre Observatory with a purpose-built, dedicated 2.5 m telescope and a 4.7 deg^2 camera with 1.2 Gpix. Starting in 2015, J-PAS will use 59 filters to measure high precision 0.003(1+z) photometric redshifts for 90M galaxies plus several million QSOs

  • Hydra II: A Faint and Compact Milky Way Dwarf Galaxy Found in the Survey of the Magellanic Stellar History
We present the discovery of a new dwarf galaxy, Hydra II, found serendipitously within the data from the ongoing Survey of the Magellanic Stellar History conducted with the Dark Energy Camera on the Blanco 4 m Telescope. The new satellite is compact ({{r}h}=68 ± 11 pc) and faint ({{M}V}=-4.8 ± 0.3), but well within the realm of dwarf galaxies. The

  • Hunting for brown dwarf binaries with X-Shooter
The refinement of the brown dwarf binary fraction may contribute to the understanding of the substellar formation mechanisms. Peculiar brown dwarf spectra or discrepancy between optical and near-infrared spectral type classification of brown dwarfs may indicate unresolved brown dwarf binary systems. We obtained medium-resolution spectra of 22 brown

  • Ground-based search for lightning in Jupiter with GTC/OSIRIS fast photometry and tunable filters
Context. Lightning flashes in Jupiter have been observed by spacecraft orbiting the planet, but so far, they have escaped optical detection from Earth. However, theoretical estimations suggest that these flashes may be detectable by a large telescope if they can be distinguished from the much more intense background of reflected sunlight from the

  • GLACE: freezing the environment of line--emitting cluster galaxies
GLACE is performing a survey of emission-line galaxies in clusters with the main aim of studying the effect of the environment in the star formation activity. The innovation of this work is the use of tunable filters in scan mode to obtain low resolution spectra of the desired emission lines. Although the survey is in its initial stage, we have

  • Gas accretion from the cosmic web in the local Universe
Numerical simulations predict that gas accretion from the cosmic web drives star formation in disks galaxies. The process is more important in low mass haloes, therefore, when galaxies were low mass in the early universe, but also in dwarf galaxies of the local universe. The central role played by cosmic gas infall is as clear from numerical
