  • The control unit of the near infrared spectrograph of the EUCLID space mission: preliminary design
The Near Infrared Spectrograph and Photometer (NISP) is one of the instruments on board the ESA EUCLID mission. The Universidad Politecnica de Cartagena and Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias are responsible of the Instrument Control Unit of the NISP (NI-ICU) in the Euclid Consortium. The NI-ICU main functions are: communication with the S/C and

  • The central parsecs of active galactic nuclei: challenges to the torus
Type 2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) are by definition nuclei in which the broad-line region and continuum light are hidden at optical/UV wavelengths by dust. Via accurate registration of infrared (IR) Very Large Telescope adaptive optics images with optical Hubble Space Telescope images we unambiguously identify the precise location of the nucleus

  • The APOGEE Red-clump Catalog: Precise Distances, Velocities, and High-resolution Elemental Abundances over a Large Area of the Milky Way's Disk
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey III's Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) is a high-resolution near-infrared spectroscopic survey covering all of the major components of the Galaxy, including the dust-obscured regions of the inner Milky Way disk and bulge. Here we present a sample of 10,341 likely red-clump stars (RC) from

  • Sher 25: pulsating but apparently alone
The blue supergiant Sher 25 is surrounded by an asymmetric, hourglass-shaped circumstellar nebula, which shows similarities to the triple-ring structure seen around SN 1987A. From optical spectroscopy over six consecutive nights, we detect periodic radial velocity variations in the stellar spectrum of Sher 25 with a peak-to-peak amplitude of ˜12 km

  • Seeing and ground meteorology forecast for site quality and observatory operations
The quality of astronomical observations is strongly related to the quality properties of the atmosphere. This parameter is important for the determination of the observation modes, and for observation program, the socalled flexible scheduling. We propose to present the implementation of the WRF model in order to routinely and automatically

  • Search for surface magnetic fields in Mira stars: first results on χ Cyg
So far, surface magnetic fields have never been reported on Mira stars, while observational facilities allowing detection and measurement of weak surface fields through the Zeeman effect have become available. Then, in order to complete the knowledge of the magnetic field and of its influence during the transition from Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB)
