  • pt5m - a 0.5 m robotic telescope on La Palma
pt5m is a 0.5 m robotic telescope located on the roof of the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope (WHT) building, at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, La Palma. Using a five-position filter wheel and CCD detector, and bespoke control software, pt5m provides a high-quality robotic observing facility. The telescope first began robotic observing in

  • Planetary Nebulae: What Can They Tell Us About Close Binary Evolution?
It is now clear that a binary pathway is responsible for a significant fraction of planetary nebulae, and the continually increasing sample of known central binaries means that we are now in a position to begin to use these systems to further our understanding of binary evolution. Binary central stars of planetary nebulae are key laboratories in

  • Optical observations of PSR J2021+3651 with the GTC
We analyzed first optical observations of 17 kyr-old PSR J2021+3651 and its pulsar wind nebula obtained with the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) telescope in the Sloan r' band. In addition, we reanalyzed archival X-ray data obtained with Chandra. The pulsar and the nebula were not detected in the optical down to 27.20 and 24.85 magnitude 3σ

  • Open cluster Dolidze 25: Stellar parameters and the metallicity in the Galactic anticentre
Context. The young open cluster Dolidze 25, in the direction of the Galactic anticentre, has been attributed a very low metallicity, with typical abundances between -0.5 and -0.7 dex below solar. Aims: We intend to derive accurate cluster parameters and accurate stellar abundances for some of its members. Methods: We have obtained a large sample of

  • New frontiers of high-resolution spectroscopy: Probing the atmospheres of brown dwarfs and reflected light from exoplanets
High-resolution spectroscopy (R>25,000) is a robust and powerful tool in the near-infrared characterization of exoplanet atmospheres. It has unambiguously revealed the presence of carbon monoxide and water in several hot Jupiters, measured the rotation rate of beta Pic b, and suggested the presence of fast day-to-night winds in one atmosphere. The

  • MUSE tells the story of NGC 4371: The dawning of secular evolution
We use data from the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE), recently commissioned at the Very Large Telescope (VLT), to study the kinematics and stellar population content of NGC 4371, an early-type massive barred galaxy in the core of the Virgo cluster. We integrate this study with a detailed structural analysis using imaging data from the
