  • The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias: 30 years of Research and Communication in Astronomy.
1985 was a year of inauguration for the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC). In that year its two observatories, the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, on the island of La Palma, (where its 10.4m optical-NIR telescope vies with the world´s major instruments), and the Observatorio del Teide, on the island of Tenerife, as well as its

  • The incidence of bar-like kinematic flows in CALIFA galaxies
We carry out a direct search for bar-like non-circular flows in intermediate-inclination, gas-rich disc galaxies with a range of morphological types and photometric bar classifications from the first data release (DR1) of the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Spectroscopy Area (CALIFA) survey. We use the DISKFIT algorithm to apply rotation only and

  • The Ghost Light of Abell 2744
Originally thought to explore the high redshift Universe, the extreme depth of the Frontier Fields survey provides also an excellent opportunity to explore with unprecedented detail the faintest component of the galaxy clusters: their intra-cluster light (ICL). In this contribution, we will show our analysis of the ICL of the cluster Abell 2744

  • The Gaia-ESO Survey: Empirical determination of the precision of stellar radial velocities and projected rotation velocities
Context. The Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) is a large public spectroscopic survey at the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope. Aims: A key aim is to provide precise radial velocities (RVs) and projected equatorial velocities (vsini) for representative samples of Galactic stars, which will complement information obtained by the Gaia astrometry

  • The formation of aromatic molecules in heavily obscured post-AGB stars with O-rich masers
We report Spitzer/IRS spectra of a small sample of heavily obscured and high mass loss post-AGB stars with O-rich maser emission. IRAM 30 m observations for two post-AGBs are also reported. The Spitzer/IRS spectra show the C-rich character of their circumstellar envelopes (CSE), as revealed by the presence of small hydrocarbon molecules such as

  • The First Billion Years project: the escape fraction of ionizing photons in the epoch of reionization
Protogalaxies forming in low-mass dark matter haloes are thought to provide the majority of ionizing photons needed to reionize the Universe, due to their high escape fractions of ionizing photons. We study how the escape fraction in high-redshift galaxies relates to the physical properties of the halo in which the galaxies form, by computing
