  • The Ionized Gas in Nearby Galaxies as Traced by the [N II] 122 and 205 μm Transitions
The [N ii] 122 and 205 μm transitions are powerful tracers of the ionized gas in the interstellar medium. By combining data from 21 galaxies selected from the Herschel KINGFISH and Beyond the Peak surveys, we have compiled 141 spatially resolved regions with a typical size of ˜1 kpc, with observations of both [N ii] far-infrared lines. We measure

  • The Fermi–GBM Three-year X-Ray Burst Catalog
The Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) is an all-sky gamma-ray monitor well known in the gamma-ray burst (GRB) community. Although GBM excels in detecting the hard, bright extragalactic GRBs, its sensitivity above 8 keV and its all-sky view make it an excellent instrument for the detection of rare, short-lived Galactic transients. In 2010 March

  • The European Solar Telescope (EST)
The European Solar Telescope (EST) is being designed to optimize studies of the magnetic coupling between the lower layers of the solar atmosphere (the photosphere and chromosphere) in order to investigate the origins and evolution of the solar magnetic field and its role in driving solar activity. In order to achieve this, the thermal, dynamic and

  • The E-ELT first light spectrograph HARMONI: capabilities and modes
HARMONI is the E-ELT's first light visible and near-infrared integral field spectrograph. It will provide four different spatial scales, ranging from coarse spaxels of 60 × 30 mas best suited for seeing limited observations, to 4 mas spaxels that Nyquist sample the diffraction limited point spread function of the E-ELT at near-infrared wavelengths

  • The complexity of the coronal line region in AGNs: Gas-jet interactions and outflows revealed by NIR spectroscopy
Apart from the classical broad line region (BLR) at small core distances, and the extended classical narrow-line region (NLR), a subset of active galactic nuclei (AGN) show, in their spectra, lines from very highly ionised atoms, known as Coronal lines (CLs). The precise nature and origin of these CLs remain uncertain. Advances on this matter

  • The chemical composition of Galactic ring nebulae around massive stars
We present deep spectra of ring nebulae associated with Wolf-Rayet (WR) and O-type stars: NGC 6888, G2.4+1.4, RCW 58, S 308, NGC 7635 and RCW 52. The data have been taken with the 10m Gran Telescopio Canarias and the 6.5m Clay Telescope. We extract spectra of several apertures in some of the objects. We derive C2+ and O2+ abundances from faint
