  • Formation of Slowly Rotating Elliptical Galaxies in Major Mergers. A Resolution Study
We study resolution effects in numerical simulations of gas-rich (20% of the total baryonic mass) major mergers, and show that the formation of slowly-rotating elliptical galaxies requires a resolution that is beyond the present-day standards to be properly modelled. Our findings show that a high-enough resolution is required to accurately model

  • Evolutionary stellar population synthesis with MILES - I. The base models and a new line index system
We present synthetic spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for single-age, single-metallicity stellar populations (SSPs) covering the full optical spectral range at moderately high resolution [full width at half-maximum (FWHM) = 2.3Å]. These SEDs constitute our base models, as they combine scaled-solar isochrones with an empirical stellar spectral

  • Evolution of the Radio-X-ray Coupling Throughout an Entire Outburst of Aquila X-1
The 2009 November outburst of the neutron star X-ray binary Aquila X-1 (Aql X-1) was observed with unprecedented radio coverage and simultaneous pointed X-ray observations, tracing the radio emission around the full X-ray hysteresis loop of the outburst for the first time. We use these data to discuss the disk-jet coupling, finding the radio

  • Evolution of blue E/S0 galaxies from z ~ 1: merger remnants or disk-rebuilding galaxies?
Context. Studying outliers from the bimodal distribution of galaxies in the color-mass space, such as morphological early-type galaxies residing in the blue cloud (blue E/S0s), can help for better understanding the physical mechanisms that lead galaxy migrations in this space. Aims: In this paper we try to bring new clues to studying the evolution

  • European Solar Telescope: Progress status
In this paper, the present status of the development of the design of the European Solar Telescope is described. The telescope is devised to have the best possible angular resolution and polarimetric performance, maximizing the throughput of the whole system. To that aim, adaptive optics and multi-conjugate adaptive optics are integrated in the

  • Double-pass spectro-imaging: TUNIS
We present TUNIS, a double-pass spectro-imager built in THEMIS as a proof-of-concept for EST. Basic concepts and selected first results are shown. We introduce the concept of a Hadamard spectral mask as a proposition to move forward from the present implementation of a single-wavelength per image pixel to a more general one of multiplexed spectral
