  • Washington photometry of five star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud
Aims: We present CCD photometry in the Washington system C and T1 passbands down to T1 ~ 22.5 in the fields of NGC 1697, SL 133, NGC 1997, SL 663, and OHSC 28, five mostly unstudied star clusters in the LMC. Methods: Cluster radii were estimated from star counts in appropriate-sized boxes distributed throughout the entire observed fields. We

  • Variability of the transitional T Tauri star T Chamaeleontis
Context: It is known that for solar-mass stars planet formation begins in a circumstellar disc. The study of transitional objects exhibiting clear signs of evolution in their discs, such as the growth of dust particles and beginning of disc dispersal, is fundamental to understanding the processes governing dust-grain coagulation and the onset of

  • Variability of the polarization profiles of the Ba II D{2} line in the solar atmosphere
Resonance-scattering polarization and the Hanle effect are powerful but seldom exploited probes into the magnetism of the quiet solar atmosphere. They are also very interesting checks of the quantum theory of atomic polarization. The Ba ii D2 line has been known for more than 20 years as presenting a conspicuous signal of resonance scattering

  • Unveiling the internal structure of massive supergiants: HD 163899
Supergiant massive stars are post-main sequence stars. During the H shell burning phase of evolution, they present a radiative core in which a strong damping prevents the pulsation modes from being excited. However Saio et al. (2006) have recently highlighted p and g pulsation modes in a post-main sequence star (HD 163899) observed by MOST. They

  • The warm ionized medium in spiral galaxies
This article reviews observations and models of the diffuse ionized gas that permeates the disk and halo of our Galaxy and others. It was inspired by a series of invited talks presented during an afternoon scientific session of the 65th birthday celebration for Professor Carl Heiles held at Arecibo Observatory in August 2004. • The secondary eclipse of the transiting exoplanet CoRoT-2b
We present a study of the light curve of the transiting exoplanet CoRoT-2b, aimed at detecting the secondary eclipse and measuring its depth. The data were obtained with the CoRoT satellite during its first run of more than 140 days. After filtering the low frequencies with a pre-whitening technique, we detect a 0.0060±0.0020% secondary eclipse
