Descripción
The bipolar outflow region S 106 is studied with optical spectroscopy
and IR mapping techniques. The physical conditions in the ionized
region, the density, temperature, ionic and total abundances of the
primary atomic species, and the extinction trends and kinematic
profiles, are analyzed. A model for the source is proposed in which
primary emission is confined to the outer limits of an outflow cavity
orientated at an angle of 110 deg to the line of sight. The outflow
velocities in the model are shown to be consistent with shock excitation
of the lower excitation line species. The IR mapping at J, H, K, L, and
M is used to analyze the source NIR energetics and to study trends in
surface brightness and color index.
