  • Fossil group origins. X. Velocity segregation in fossil systems
Aims: We aim to study how the velocity segregation and the radial profile of the velocity dispersion depend on the prominence of the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). Methods: We divided a sample of 102 clusters and groups of galaxies into four bins of magnitude gap between the two brightest cluster members. We then computed the velocity

  • Fast-to-Alfvén Mode Conversion and Ambipolar Heating in Structured Media. I. Simplified Cold Plasma Model
Linear fast magnetoacoustic waves are introduced into a cold stratified plasma model made up of a doubly periodic ensemble of straight diminished-Alfvén-speed tubes. Coupling between fast and Alfvén waves is produced by stratification and the tube structures, and scattering is strong for wavelengths comparable to the inter-tube separation

  • Euclid preparation. V. Predicted yield of redshift 7 < z < 9 quasars from the wide survey
We provide predictions of the yield of 7 < z < 9 quasars from the Euclid wide survey, updating the calculation presented in the Euclid Red Book in several ways. We account for revisions to the Euclid near-infrared filter wavelengths; we adopt steeper rates of decline of the quasar luminosity function (QLF; Φ) with redshift, Φ ∝ 10 k(z - 6), k = -0

  • Discovery of a nitrogen-enhanced mildly metal-poor binary system: Possible evidence for pollution from an extinct AGB star
We report the serendipitous discovery of a nitrogen-rich, mildly metal-poor ([Fe/H] = -1.08) giant star in a single-lined spectroscopic binary system found in the SDSS-IV Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2) survey, Data Release 14 (DR14). Previous work has assumed that two percent of halo giants with unusual elemental

  • Detection of the PSR J1741+1351 white dwarf companion with the Gran Telescopio Canarias
We report detection of the binary companion to the millisecond pulsar J1741+1351 with the Gran Telescopio Canarias. The optical source position coincides with the pulsar coordinates and its magnitudes are g′ = 24.84(5), r′ = 24.38(4) and i′ = 24.17(4). Comparison of the data with the WD evolutionary models shows that the source can be a He-core WD
