  • The Initial-Final Mass Relationship of White Dwarfs in Common Proper Motion Pairs and Open Clusters
The initial-to-final mass relationship is the connection between the mass of a white dwarf and the mass of its progenitor in the main sequence. This function is of paramount importance to aspects such as determining ages and distances of globular clusters, constraining the chemical evolution in galaxies, and also understanding the properties of the

  • The innermost globular clusters of M87
We present a comprehensive multiwavelength photometric analysis of the innermost (˜3 × 3 kpc2) 110 globular clusters (GCs) of M87. Their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) were built taking advantage of new ground-based high-resolution near-infrared imaging aided by adaptive optics at the Very Large Telescope combined with Hubble Space Telescope

  • The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias: 30 years of Research and Communication in Astronomy.
1985 was a year of inauguration for the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC). In that year its two observatories, the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, on the island of La Palma, (where its 10.4m optical-NIR telescope vies with the world´s major instruments), and the Observatorio del Teide, on the island of Tenerife, as well as its

  • The interacting Wolf-Rayet galaxy MKN 8
We present results of narrow-band and broad-band optical CCD imaging together with intermediate-resolution spectroscopy of the Wolf-Rayet galaxy Mkn 8. Analysis of the morphology and kinematics of the object indicates that the strong star formation episode we are witnessing in Mkn 8 is the product of the interaction of two (or three) disk galaxies

  • The Interpretation of a 2175A Absorption Feature in the Gravitational Lens Galaxy SBS0909 + 532 at z = 0.83
Comparison of recent spectra by V. Motta et al. (V. Motta et al.: Astrophys. J. 574, 719 725) of two images of a distant gravitationally lensed quasar (z = 1.38) leads to an extinction curve of the lens galaxy (z = 0.83) showing clear evidence of a 2175A absorption feature. We compare these data with measured extinction curves from the Galaxy, LMC

  • The Ionized Gas in Nearby Galaxies as Traced by the [N II] 122 and 205 μm Transitions
The [N ii] 122 and 205 μm transitions are powerful tracers of the ionized gas in the interstellar medium. By combining data from 21 galaxies selected from the Herschel KINGFISH and Beyond the Peak surveys, we have compiled 141 spatially resolved regions with a typical size of ˜1 kpc, with observations of both [N ii] far-infrared lines.
