  • An Hα Nuclear Spiral Structure in the E0 Active Galaxy Arp 102B
We report the discovery of a two-armed mini-spiral structure within the inner kiloparsec of the E0 LINER/Seyfert 1 galaxy Arp 102B. The arms are observed in Hα emission and located east and west of the nucleus, extending up to ≈1 kpc from it. We use narrow-band imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys, in combination with

  • A pilot study for the SCUBA-2 `All-Sky' Survey
We have carried out a pilot study for the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 (SCUBA-2) ‘All-Sky’ Survey (SASSy), a wide and shallow mapping project at 850 μm, designed to find rare objects, both Galactic and extragalactic. Two distinct sets of exploratory observations were undertaken and used to test the SASSy approach and data-reduction

  • A comparison of galaxy group luminosity functions from semi-analytic models
Semi-analytic models (SAMs) are currently one of the primary tools with which we model statistically significant ensembles of galaxies. The underlying physical prescriptions inherent to each SAM are, in many cases, different from one another. Several SAMs have been applied to the dark matter merger trees extracted from the Millennium Run, including

  • A 12 Minute Orbital Period Detached White Dwarf Eclipsing Binary
We have discovered a detached pair of white dwarfs (WDs) with a 12.75 minute orbital period and a 1315 km s-1 radial velocity amplitude. We measure the full orbital parameters of the system using its light curve, which shows ellipsoidal variations, Doppler boosting, and primary and secondary eclipses. The primary is a 0.25 M sun tidally distorted

  • 86 Herschel sources SED model parameters (Rowan-Robinson+, 2010)
We present spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for 86 Herschel sources detected at 5σ at 250, 350 and 500um in the HerMES SWIRE-Lockman field. We explore whether existing models for starbursts, quiescent star-forming galaxies and active galactic nucleus dust tori are able to model the full range of SEDs measured with Herschel. We find that while
