  • Gas accretion from halos to disks: observations, curiosities, and problems
Accretion of gas from the cosmic web to galaxy halos and ultimately their disks is a prediction of modern cosmological models but is rarely observed directly or at the full rate expected from star formation. Here we illustrate possible large-scale cosmic HI accretion onto the nearby dwarf starburst galaxy IC10, observed with the VLA and GBT. We

  • Formation of S0 galaxies with intermediate kinematics by minor mergers
Recently, it has been found that classifying early-type galaxies into fast and slow rotators based on their kinematics is more in accordance with their physical properties than the traditional morphological classification of S0 and ellipticals. In the framework of the kinematic classification, observations by the ATLAS3D Project have found that

  • Evidence for the Non-destruction of the Most Massive Molecular Clouds even After they have Given Birth to Massive Star Clusters
We have observed the interacting galaxies system, the Antennae, using the Fabry-Perot interferometer GHαFaS on the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma, deriving the Hα surface brightness, velocity and velocity dispersion maps, and extracting key physical parameters (mean electron density, mass

  • Evidence for temporal evolution in the M33 disc as traced by its star clusters
We present precision radial velocities and stellar population parameters for 77 star clusters in the Local Group galaxy M33. Our Gran Telescopio de Canarias and William Herschel Telescope observations sample both young, massive clusters and known/candidate globular clusters (GCs), spanning ages ˜106-1010 yr, and metallicities, [M/H] ˜ -1.7 to solar

  • Dust and molecules in extra-galactic planetary nebulae
Extra-galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) permit the study of dust and molecules in metallicity environments other than the Galaxy. Their known distances lower the number of free parameters in the observations vs. models comparison, providing strong constraints on the gas-phase and solid-state astrochemistry models. Observations of PNe in the Galaxy

  • Direct imaging of haloes and truncations in face-on nearby galaxies
We use ultra-deep imaging from the IAC Stripe82 Legacy Project to study the surface photometry of 22 nearby, face-on to moderately inclined spiral galaxies. The reprocessed and co-added SDSS/Stripe82 imaging allows us to probe the galaxy down to 29-30 r‧-magnitudes/arcsec2 and thus reach into the very faint outskirts of the galaxies. We find
