  • Direct imaging of haloes and truncations in face-on nearby galaxies
We use ultra-deep imaging from the IAC Stripe 82 Legacy Project to study the surface photometry of 22 nearby, face-on to moderately inclined spiral galaxies. The reprocessed and co-added SDSS/Stripe 82 imaging allows us to probe down to 29-30 r'-mag/arcsec2 and thus reach into the very faint outskirts of the galaxies. We find extended stellar

  • Developments in fiber-positioning technology for the WEAVE instrument at the William Herschel Telescope
WEAVE is the next-generation wide-field optical spectroscopy facility for the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) on La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain. It is a multi-object "pick-and-place" fibre-fed spectrograph with a 1000 fibre multiplex behind a new dedicated 2° prime focus corrector. The WEAVE positioner concept uses two robots working in

  • Development of cryogenic components based on COTS parts for the HARMONI instrument
HARMONI is an integral field spectrograph working at visible and near-infrared wavelengths. The instrument will be part of the first-light complement at the E-ELT. The IAC is in charge of several work packages and the design of two important components is ongoing: A 'Cryogenic Pupil Mask Rotator' based on a direct drive brushless motor, and a

  • Detecting microvariability in type 2 quasars using enhanced F-test
Microvariability (intranight variability) is a low amplitude flux change at short time-scales (i.e. hours). It has been detected in unobscured type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) and blazars. However in type 2 AGN, the detection is hampered by the low contrast between the presumably variable nucleus and the host galaxy. In this paper, we present a

  • Design of the calibration unit for the WEAVE multi-object spectrograph at the WHT
WEAVE is the next-generation spectroscopic facility for the William Herschel Telescope (WHT), offering multi-object (1000 fibres) and integral-field spectroscopy at two resolutions (R 5000, 20000) over a 2-deg field of view at prime focus. WEAVE will (mainly) provide optical follow up of ground-based (LOFAR) and space-based (GAIA) surveys. First

  • Commissioning and first observations with Wide FastCam at the Telescopio Carlos Sánchez
The FastCam instrument platform, jointly developed by the IAC and the UPCT, allows, in real-time, acquisition, selection and storage of images with a resolution that reaches the diffraction limit of medium-sized telescopes. FastCam incorporates a specially designed software package to analyse series of tens of thousands of images in parallel with
