  • Formation of polarized spectral lines in atmospheres with horizontal inhomogeneities
We study the problem of the generation and transfer of spectral line intensity and polarization in models of stellar atmospheres with horizontal plasma inhomogeneities. We solve the non-LTE radiative transfer problem in full 3D geometry taking into account resonant scattering polarization and its modification by magnetic fields via the Hanle effect

  • Formation of S0 galaxies through mergers. Antitruncated stellar discs resulting from major mergers <xref ref-type="fn" rid="FN1">
Context. Lenticular galaxies (S0s) are more likely to host antitruncated (Type III) stellar discs than galaxies of later Hubble types. Major mergers are popularly considered too violent to make these breaks. Aims: We have investigated whether major mergers can result into S0-like remnants with realistic antitruncated stellar discs or not. Methods

  • Full Stokes observations in the He i 1083 nm spectral region covering an M3.2 flare
We present an exceptional data set acquired with the Vacuum Tower Telescope (Tenerife, Spain) covering the pre-flare, flare, and post-flare stages of an M3.2 flare. The full Stokes spectropolarimetric observations were recorded with the Tenerife Infrared Polarimeter in the He i 1083.0 nm spectral region. The object under study was active region

  • Fullerenes as carriers of extinction, diffuse interstellar bands and anomalous microwave emission
According to semiempirical models, photoabsorption by fullerenes (single and multishell) could explain the shape, width and peak energy of the most prominent feature of the interstellar absorption, the UV bump at 2175 Å. Other weaker transitions are predicted in the optical and near-infrared providing a potential explanation for diffuse

  • Fundamental parameters of stars (Allende Prieto+, 1999)
The Hipparcos mission has made it possible to constrain the positions of nearby field stars in the colour-magnitude diagram with very high accuracy. These positions can be compared with the predictions of stellar evolutionary calculations to provide information on the basic parameters of the stars: masses, radii, effective temperatures, ages, and
