  • The Substellar Population in σ Orionis
The σ Orionis cluster (˜3 Myr, 350 pc) is an ideal site to investigate the early evolution of substellar (brown dwarf and planetary mass) objects. To date, the cluster photometric and spectroscopic sequence of free-floaters is known for a wide mass range from 1M&sun; down to roughly 3MJup. The substellar domain covers spectral types that go from

  • The star formation and chemical enrichment history of the Fornax dSph galaxy
We present new deep color-magnitude diagrams at different galactocentric distances of the Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxy Fornax, and preliminary results on metallicities of individual stars, obtained from Ca II triplet spectroscopy. These data will be used to reliably derive the star formation and chemical enrichment histories of this galaxy

  • The sigma Orionis substellar population. VLT/FORS spectroscopy and 2MASS photometry
VLT/FORS spectroscopy and 2MASS near-infrared photometry, together with previously known data, have been used to establish the membership and the properties of a sample of low-mass candidate members of the sigma Orionis cluster with masses spanning from 1 Msun down to about 0.013 Msun (i.e., deuterium-burning mass limit). We have observed K-band

  • The First Young Brown Dwarf in the Serpens Cloud
We report the discovery of the first young brown dwarf in the Serpens cloud (BD-Ser 1). It is obscured by more than ten magnitudes of visual absorption as indicated by near infrared (NIR) photometric survey at the NTT and confirmed by NIR spectroscopy at the VLT. We estimate the mass of this brown dwarf to be M ˜0.05 M&sun; and its age to be ˜3.5

  • The cosmic microwave background power spectrum out to l= 1400 measured by the Very Small Array
We have observed the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in three regions of sky using the Very Small Array (VSA) in an extended configuration with antennas of beamwidth 2° at 34 GHz. Combined with data from previous VSA observations using a more compact array with larger beamwidth, we measure the power spectrum of the primordial CMB anisotropies
