  • Globular Cluster and Galaxy Formation: M31, the Milky Way, and Implications for Globular Cluster Systems of Spiral Galaxies
We find that the globular cluster (GC) systems of the Milky Way and of our neighboring spiral galaxy, M31, comprise two distinct entities, differing in three respects. First, M31 has a set of young GCs, ranging in age from a few times 102 Myr to 5 Gyr old, as well as old GCs. No such very young GCs are known in the Milky Way. Second, we confirm

  • Evidence of a Black Hole in the X-Ray Transient GS 1354-64 (=BW Circini)
We present the first radial velocity curve of the companion star to BW Cir that demonstrates the presence of a black hole in this X-ray transient that recorded outbursts in 1987 and 1997 (and possibly 1971-1972). We identify weak absorption features corresponding to a G0-5 III donor star, strongly veiled by a residual accretion disk that

  • ELAIS: final band-merged catalogue (Rowan-Robinson+, 2004)
The catalog represents the final band-merged European Large-Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) Catalogue at 6.7, 15, 90 and 175{mu}m, and the associated data at U, g', r', i', Z, J, H, K and 20cm. Details about the origin of the survey, the observations, data reduction and optical identification are described in the paper. In addition to fluxes in the radio

  • Dynamics of Loop Quantum Gravity and Spin Foam Models in Three Dimensions
We present a rigorous regularization of Rovellis's generalized projection operator in canonical 2+1 gravity. This work establishes a clear-cut connection between loop quantum gravity and the spin foam approach in this simplified setting. The point of view adopted here provides a new perspective to tackle the problem of dynamics in the physically
