  • GRB 050904 at redshift 6.3: observations of the oldest cosmic explosion after the Big Bang
We present optical and near-infrared observations of the afterglow of the gamma-ray burst GRB 050904. We derive a photometric redshift z = 6.3, estimated from the presence of the Lyman break falling between the I and J filters. This is by far the most distant GRB known to date. Its isotropic-equivalent energy is 3.4 × 1053 erg in the rest-frame 110

  • Gas and dust properties in the afterglow spectra of GRB 050730
We present early WHT ISIS optical spectroscopy of the afterglow of gamma-ray burst GRB 050730. The spectrum shows a DLA system with the highest measured hydrogen column to date: N(H I) = 22.1 ± 0.1 at the third-highest GRB redshift z = 3.968. Our analysis of the Swift XRT X-ray observations of the early afterglow show X-ray flares accompanied by

  • First all-sky upper limits from LIGO on the strength of periodic gravitational waves using the Hough transform
We perform a wide parameter-space search for continuous gravitational waves over the whole sky and over a large range of values of the frequency and the first spin-down parameter. Our search method is based on the Hough transform, which is a semicoherent, computationally efficient, and robust pattern recognition technique. We apply this technique

  • Final analysis of ELAIS 15-{mu}m (Vaccari+, 2005)
We present the final analysis of the European Large Area Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) Survey (ELAIS) 15-{mu}m observations, carried out with the ISO Camera (ISOCAM) instrument on board the ISO. The data-reduction method, known as the Lari Method, is based on a mathematical model of the behaviour of the detector and was specifically designed for

  • Dynamics of Coronal Loop Oscillations Recent Improvements and Computational Aspects
We will discuss the observed, heavily damped transversal oscillations of coronal loops. These oscillations are often modeled as transversal kink oscillations in a cylinder. Several features are added to the classical cylindrical model. In our models we include loop curvature, longitudinal density stratification, and highly inhomogeneous radial
