  • H I observations of two starburst galaxies in probable interaction
We propose to perform H I observations of two starburst galaxies that show optical interaction features with surrounding objects and for which we have both broad-band and H-alpha imagery and optical spectroscopy. We will estimate the distribution of the atomic gas throughout the galaxies, looking for morphological features that reveal interaction

  • Flux Upper Limit on Gamma-Ray Emission by GRB 050713a from MAGIC Telescope Observations
The long-duration γ-ray burst GRB 050713a was observed by the MAGIC Telescope 40 s after the burst onset and followed up for 37 minutes, until twilight. The observation, triggered by a Swift alert, covered energies above ~175 GeV. Using standard MAGIC analysis, no evidence of a γ-ray signal was found. As the redshift of the GRB was not measured

  • Erratum: ``A Chandra Survey of Nearby Spiral Galaxies. I. Point Source Catalogs'' (ApJS, 159, 214 [2005])
Due to an oversight at the editorial offices, the published version of our paper is missing the catalog table discussed in the text. We here give this table as Table 4, with the complete machine-readable table available in the electronic edition. In the text of the article, discussions of ``the catalog tables for each galaxy'' should refer to Table

  • Elemental abundance survey of the Galactic thick disc
We have performed an abundance analysis for F- and G- dwarfs of the Galactic thick-disc component. A sample of 176 nearby (d= 70 per cent taken as certain membership, we assigned 95 stars to the thick disc, 13 to the thin disc, and 20 to the halo. The remaining 48 stars in the sample cannot be assigned with reasonable certainty to one of the three

  • Detection of the Effect of Cosmological Large-Scale Structure on the Orientation of Galaxies
Galaxies are not distributed randomly throughout space but are instead arranged in an intricate ``cosmic web'' of filaments and walls surrounding bubble-like voids. There is still no compelling observational evidence of a link between the structure of the cosmic web and how galaxies form within it. However, such a connection is expected on the

  • DDO 44 and UGC 4998: Distances, Metallicities, and Star Formation Histories
We have obtained deep HST imaging of two candidate dwarf systems in the nearby M81 Group, DDO 44 and UGC 4998. Both are isolated, low surface brightness systems, but with likely very different star formation histories based on their mean colors and color fluctuations. The color-magnitude diagrams of these galaxies have been used to estimate their
