  • Medium-resolution Isaac Newton Telescope library of empirical spectra - II. The stellar atmospheric parameters
We present a homogeneous set of stellar atmospheric parameters (Teff, logg, [Fe/H]) for MILES, a new spectral stellar library covering the range λλ 3525-7500Å at 2.3Å (FWHM) spectral resolution. The library consists of 985 stars spanning a large range in atmospheric parameters, from super-metal-rich, cool stars to hot, metal-poor stars. The

  • Magnetoelectric coupling in epitaxial orthorhombic YMnO3 thin films
We have grown epitaxial thin-films of the orthorhombic phase of YMnO3 oxide on Nb:SrTiO3(001) substrates and their structure, magnetic and dielectric response have been measured. We have found that a substrate-induced strain produces an in-plane compression of the YMnO3 unit cell. The temperature-dependent magnetization curves display a significant

  • Kinematics of planet-host stars and their relation to dynamical streams in the solar neighbourhood
We present a detailed study on the kinematics of metal-rich stars with and without planets, and their relation to the Hyades, Sirius and Hercules dynamical streams in the solar neighbourhood. Accurate kinematics have been derived for all the stars belonging to the CORALIE planet search survey. We used precise radial velocity measurements and CCF

  • Instrumental Approaches to Magnetic and Velocity Measurements in and out of the Ecliptic Plane
Velocity and magnetic fields are derived from subtracting intensity measurements made at different times and, normally, under different conditions. This differential imaging property puts important requirements on image stabilization. Examples of the implications for the Solar Orbiter mission are discussed. Similarly, we review how spectral and

  • Influence of Atomic Polarization and Horizontal Illumination on the Stokes Profiles of the He I 10830 Å Multiplet
The polarization observed in the spectral lines of the He I 10830 Å multiplet carries valuable information on the dynamical and magnetic properties of plasma structures in the solar chromosphere and corona. Therefore, it is crucial to have a good physical understanding of its sensitivity to the various competing physical mechanisms. Here we focus

  • GRB 050713A: High-Energy Observations of the Gamma-Ray Burst Prompt and Afterglow Emission
Swift discovered GRB 050713A and slewed promptly to begin observing with its narrow-field instruments 72.6 s after the burst onset, while the prompt gamma-ray emission was still detectable in the BAT. Simultaneous emission from two flares is detected in the BAT and XRT. This burst marks just the second time that the BAT and XRT have simultaneously
