  • Scattering polarization of hydrogen lines from electric-induced atomic alignment
We consider a gas of hydrogen atoms illuminated by a broadband unpolarized radiation with zero anisotropy. In the absence of external fields, atomic J-levels are thus isotropically populated. While this condition persists in the presence of a magnetic field, we show instead that electric fields can induce the alignment of these levels. We also show

  • Rubidium and Zirconium Production in Massive AGB Stars
A recent survey of a large sample of massive Galactic asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars shows that significant overabundances of rubidium (up to 100 times solar), but merely solar zirconium, are present in these stars. These observations can set constraints on our theoretical notion of the slow neutron capture process (the s process) in AGB stars

  • Redshifts in z~0.25 clusters (Verdugo+, 2008)
We present measurements for all objects for which we were able to derive secure redshifts. This includes galaxies belonging to the six aforementioned clusters, four serendipitously found groups and the general field (see the paper and below). For each object, table3.dat provides the identification code, membership, right ascension and declination

  • Properties of the Coolest Dwarfs
Eleven years after the discovery of the first T dwarf, a population of ultracool L and T dwarfs has been identified that is large enough to show a range of atmospheric properties. Also, model atmospheres are sufficiently advanced to study these properties in detail. Since the last Cool Stars meeting, several observational developments have aided in

  • On the masses and evolutionary status of the black hole binary GX 339-4: a twin system of XTE J1550-564?
We apply the K-correction to the black hole low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) GX 339-4 which implies MX >= 6Msolar by only assuming that the companion is more massive than ~0.17Msolar, the lower limit allowed by applying a `stripped-giant' model. This evolutionary model successfully reproduces the observed properties of the system. We obtain a maximum
