  • VSOP: Fixing the variable sky with one-shot typing of neglected variables
Stellar variability types are assigned on the basis of lightcurve appearance, which often remains unchallenged without further observational evidence. VSOP (Variable Star One-shot Project) is a large international collaboration, which has so far obtained spectra of more than 500 stars during the past year. Operationally this program is a completely

  • VHE γ-Ray Observation of the Crab Nebula and its Pulsar with the MAGIC Telescope
We report about very high energy (VHE) γ-ray observations of the Crab Nebula with the MAGIC telescope. The γ-ray flux from the nebula was measured between 60 GeV and 9 TeV. The energy spectrum can be described by a curved power law dF/dE=f0(E/300 GeV)[a+blog10(E/300GeV)] with a flux normalization f0 of (6.0+/-0.2stat)×10-10 cm-2 s-1 TeV-1, a=-2.31+

  • Time variation of the fine structure constant in the early universe and the Bekenstein model
Aims:We calculate the bounds on the variation in the fine structure constant at the time of primordial nucleosynthesis and at the time of neutral hydrogen formation. We used these bounds and other bounds from the late universe to test the Bekenstein model. Methods: We modified the Kawano code, CAMB, and CosmoMC to include the possible variation in

  • The VLT-FLAMES survey of massive stars: atmospheric parameters and rotational velocity distributions for B-type stars in the Magellanic Clouds
Aims:We aim to provide the atmospheric parameters and rotational velocities for a large sample of O- and early B-type stars, analysed in a homogeneous and consistent manner, for use in constraining theoretical models. Methods: Atmospheric parameters, stellar masses, and rotational velocities have been estimated for approximately 250 early B-type

  • The signature of chromospheric heating in Ca II H spectra
Context: The heating process that balances the solar chromospheric energy losses has not yet been determined. Conflicting views exist on the source of the energy and the influence of photospheric magnetic fields on chromospheric heating. Aims: We analyze a 1-h time series of cospatial Ca II H intensity spectra and photospheric polarimetric spectra

  • The Resonant Damping of Fast Magnetohydrodynamic Oscillations in a System of Two Coronal Slabs
Observations of transverse coronal loop oscillations very often show the excitation and damping of oscillations in groups of coronal loops rather than in individual and isolated structures. We present results on the oscillatory properties (periods, damping rates, and spatial distribution of perturbations) for resonantly damped oscillations in a
