  • Bar strengths in early-type disk galaxies
Using the gravitational torque indicator Qb, we derive the distribution of bar strengths for a sample of early-type disk galaxies. The sample is part of the Near-Infrared S0 Survey (NIRS0S), designed to examine the properties of bars, bulges, and disks in galaxies classified as types S0- to Sa. Although the survey is only partly finished, we find

  • Absolute parameters of the short-period binary HY Virginis from JHK light curves and spectroscopy
We present the first light curves in the infrared J, H and K filters of HY Vir. Based on HY Vir and template stars spectra in the region 8440 8870 Å, we classify as F0 both stellar components of the binary. Also, we obtain the first radial velocity curves of the system. The analysis of the JHK light curves is carried out using a code based in ATLAS

  • A SINFONI view of circum-nuclear star-forming rings in spiral galaxies
We present near-infrared (H- and K-band) SINFONI integral-field observations of the circumnuclear star formation rings in five nearby spiral galaxies. We made use of the relative intensities of different emission lines (i.e. [FeII], HeI, Brγ) to age date the stellar clusters present along the rings. This qualitative, yet robust, method allows us to

  • A New Approach to the Solar Oxygen Abundance Problem
In this work we present new data that sets strong constraints on the solar oxygen abundance. Our approach, based on the analysis of spectropolarimetric observations, is almost model-independent and therefore extremely robust. The asymmetry of the Stokes V profile of the 6300 Å [O I] and Ni I blend is used as an indicator of the relative abundances
