  • Magnetohydrodynamic turbulent cascade of coronal loop magnetic fields
The Parker model for coronal heating is investigated through a high resolution simulation. An inertial range is resolved where fluctuating magnetic energy EM(k⊥)∝k⊥-2.7 exceeds kinetic energy EK(k⊥)∝k⊥-0.6. Increments scale as δbℓ≃ℓ-0.85andδuℓ≃ℓ+0.2 with velocity increasing at small scales, indicating that magnetic reconnection plays a prime role

  • MAGIC Observations and multiwavelength properties of the quasar 3C 279 in 2007 and 2009
Context. 3C 279, the first quasar discovered to emit VHE γ-rays by the MAGIC telescope in 2006, was reobserved by MAGIC in January 2007 during a major optical flare and from December 2008 to April 2009 following an alert from the Fermi space telescope on an exceptionally high γ-ray state. Aims: The January 2007 observations resulted in a detection

  • Low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in Praesepe (Baker+, 2010)
Presented are the results of a large and deep optical-near-infrared multi-epoch survey of the Praesepe open star cluster using data from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Galactic Clusters Survey. Multiple colour-magnitude diagrams were used to select potential members and proper motions were used to assign levels of membership

  • Kepler observations of the variability in B-type stars
The analysis of the light curves of 48 B-type stars observed by Kepler is presented. Among these are 15 pulsating stars, all of which show low frequencies, characteristic of slowly pulsating B (SPB) stars. Seven of these stars also show a few weak, isolated high frequencies and they could be considered as SPB/β Cephei (β Cep) hybrids. In all cases

  • Kepler observations of Am stars
We present an analysis of high-resolution spectra for two pulsating Am stars in the Kepler field. The stellar parameters derived in this way are important because parameters derived from narrow-band photometry may be affected by the strong metal lines in these stars. We analyse the Kepler time series of ten known Am stars and find that six of them

  • Insight into the Formation of the Milky Way through Cold Halo Substructure. II. The Elemental Abundances of ECHOS
We determine the average metallicities of the elements of cold halo substructure (ECHOS) that we previously identified in the inner halo of the Milky Way within 17.5 kpc of the Sun. As a population, we find that stars kinematically associated with ECHOS are chemically distinct from the background kinematically smooth inner halo stellar population
