  • Coma Morphology and Rotational Dynamics of Comet 103P/Hartley 2 during the DIXI Encounter
The target of the NASA DIXI mission, comet 103P/Hartley 2 is in a non-principal-axis (NPA) rotational state that was observed to be varying with time. However, there is still no consensus on the specific NPA rotational state during the 103P/Hartley 2 encounter by DIXI. We analyze the continuum features observed in ground-based images bracketing the

  • Analysis of the CN and CH Molecular Band Strengths in Stars of the Open Cluster NGC 6791
Low-resolution SDSS/SEGUE spectra have been used to study the behavior of the strengths of the CN and CH molecular bands in stars at different evolutionary stages of the open cluster NGC 6791. We find a significant spread in the strengths of the CN bands, more than twice that expected from the uncertainties, although the bimodalities observed in

  • GALAXIES WITH MULTIPLE BARS: CONSTRAINTS ON THEIR FORMATION SCENARIOS
Much of current astrophysical research is aimed at addressing one key issue: how galaxies form and evolve. We still do not fully understand the evolutionary processes driving the lifetimes of the zoo of galaxies which populate the Universe. Galaxies may be isolated, or in groups or clusters; they may appear as pure ellipsoids or discs or include a

  • WEAVE: the next generation wide-field spectroscopy facility for the William Herschel Telescope
We present the preliminary design of the WEAVE next generation spectroscopy facility for the William Herschel Telescope (WHT), principally targeting optical ground-based follow up of upcoming ground-based (LOFAR) and spacebased (Gaia) surveys. WEAVE is a multi-object and multi-IFU facility utilizing a new 2 degree prime focus field of view at the

  • Very Low Mass Stellar and Substellar Companions to Solar-like Stars from MARVELS. II. A Short-period Companion Orbiting an F Star with Evidence of a Stellar Tertiary and Significant Mutual Inclination
We report the discovery via radial velocity (RV) measurements of a short-period (P = 2.430420 ± 0.000006 days) companion to the F-type main-sequence star TYC 2930-00872-1. A long-term trend in the RV data also suggests the presence of a tertiary stellar companion with P > 2000 days. High-resolution spectroscopy of the host star yields T eff = 6427

  • Variability of the blazar 4C 38.41 (B3 1633+382) from GHz frequencies to GeV energies
Context. After years of modest optical activity, the quasar-type blazar 4C 38.41 (B3 1633+382) experienced a large outburst in 2011, which was detected throughout the entire electromagnetic spectrum, renewing interest in this source. Aims: We present the results of low-energy multifrequency monitoring by the GLAST-AGILE Support Program (GASP) of
