  • Identification of red supergiants in nearby galaxies with mid-IR photometry
Context. The role of episodic mass loss in massive-star evolution is one of the most important open questions of current stellar evolution theory. Episodic mass loss produces dust and therefore causes evolved massive stars to be very luminous in the mid-infrared and dim at optical wavelengths. Aims: We aim to increase the number of investigated

  • Identification of pulsation modes from spectroscopy
Time-series of high-resolution spectra of massive main-sequence pulsators contain information on the degree l and azimuthal number m of a pulsation mode. I present an overview of existing mode-identification techniques that have been developed to derive l and m from spectroscopic data. I also discuss the data quality needed to perform such a study

  • Herschel Multitiered Extragalactic Survey: clusters of dusty galaxies uncovered by Herschel and Planck
The potential for Planck to detect clusters of dusty, star-forming galaxies at z > 1 is tested by examining the Herschel-SPIRE images of Planck Early Release Compact Source Catalog sources lying in fields observed by the Herschel Multitiered Extragalactic Survey. Of the 16 Planck sources that lie in the ˜90 sq. deg. examined, we find that 12 are

  • First Results from a Study of DIBs with Thousands of High-Quality Massive-Star Spectra
We are using five different surveys to compile the largest sample of diffuse interstellar band (DIB) measurements ever collected. GOSSS is obtaining intermediate-resolution blue-violet spectroscopy of ~2500 OB stars, of which 60% have already been observed and processed. The other four surveys have already collected multi-epoch high-resolution

  • Fast orbital decays of black hole X-ray binaries: XTE J1118+480 and A0620-00★
We present new 10.4 m-GTC/OSIRIS spectroscopic observations of the black hole X-ray binary XTE J1118+480 that confirm the orbital period decay at dot{P}=-1.90± 0.57 ms yr-1. This corresponds to a period change of -0.88 ± 0.27 μs per orbital cycle. We have also collected observations of the black hole X-ray binary A0620-00 to derive an orbital

  • Discovering and Characterizing new Y Dwarfs at the Faint Limits of WISE
We propose to continue our near-IR followup of ultracool dwarf candidates in the WISE survey. We identify candidate late-T and Y dwarfs at the faint limits of the survey by using WISE multiple measurements and photometric profile fits to identify non-variable point sources detected only in W2. Photometry at J identifies likely cool objects, and H
