  • TRACING AND ISOLATING MAJOR MERGERS TRIGGERED IN GALAXY EVOLUTION: SPATIALLY RESOLVED PROPERTIES ALONG THE MERGER SEQUENCE.
Interactions and mergers have proved to be fundamental mechanisms for galaxy evolution. Galaxy-galaxy encounters could induce inflows of material as well as the enhancement of star formation. They could also lead to outflows by (stellar or active galactic nuclear) feedback. Despite the efforts to characterize and to understand the evolution of the

  • The stellar spectral features of nearby galaxies in the near infrared: tracers of thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch stars?
We analyse the stellar absorption features in high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) near-infrared (NIR) spectra of the nuclear region of 12 nearby galaxies, mostly spirals. The features detected in some or all of the galaxies in this sample are the TiO (0.843 and 0.886 μm), VO (1.048 μm), CN (1.1 and 1.4 μm), H2O (1.4 and 1.9 μm) and CO (1.6 and 2.3 μm)

  • The star formation history of galaxies: the role of galaxy mass, morphology and environment
We analyse the star formation history (SFH) of galaxies as a function of present-day environment, galaxy stellar mass and morphology. The SFH is derived by means of a non-parametric spectrophotometric model applied to individual galaxies at z ˜ 0.04-0.1 in the WIde-field Nearby Galaxy-cluster Survey (WINGS) clusters and the Padova Millennium Galaxy

  • The Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G): Stellar Masses, Sizes, and Radial Profiles for 2352 Nearby Galaxies
The Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies is a volume, magnitude, and size-limited survey of 2352 nearby galaxies with deep imaging at 3.6 and 4.5 μm. In this paper, we describe our surface photometry pipeline and showcase the associated data products that we have released to the community. We also identify the physical mechanisms leading

  • The Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G): Precise Stellar Mass Distributions from Automated Dust Correction at 3.6 μm
The mid-infrared is an optimal window to trace stellar mass in nearby galaxies and the 3.6 μ {{m}} IRAC band has been exploited to this effect, but such mass estimates can be biased by dust emission. We present our pipeline to reveal the old stellar flux at 3.6 μm and obtain stellar mass maps for more than 1600 galaxies available from the Spitzer
