  • Brown Dwarfs and Free-Floating Planets in Young Stellar Clusters
Brown dwarfs are substellar objects unable to stably fuse hydrogen in their interior. Since the discovery of the first brown dwarf in an open cluster, namely, Teide 1 (Rebolo et al. Nature 377:129-131, 1995), many searches for substellar objects have been carried out in young stellar clusters and associations, such as Pleiades, Orion, Upper

  • Bayesian Methods for Exoplanet Science
Exoplanet research is carried out at the limits of the capabilities of current telescopes and instruments. The studied signals are weak and often embedded in complex systematics from instrumental, telluric, and astrophysical sources. Combining repeated observations of periodic events, simultaneous observations with multiple telescopes, different

  • What is the Milky Way outer halo made of?. High resolution spectroscopy of distant red giants
In a framework where galaxies form hierarchically, extended stellar haloes are predicted to be an ubiquitous feature around Milky Way-like galaxies and to consist mainly of the shredded stellar component of smaller galactic systems. The type of accreted stellar systems are expected to vary according to the specific accretion and merging history of

  • Three Super-Earths Transiting the Nearby Star GJ 9827
We report on the discovery of three transiting planets around GJ 9827. The planets have radii of 1.75 ± 0.18, 1.36 ± 0.14, and {2.11}-0.21+0.22 R ⊕, and periods of 1.20896, 3.6480, and 6.2014 days, respectively. The detection was made in Campaign 12 observations as part of our K2 survey of nearby stars. GJ 9827 is a V = 10.39 mag K6V star at a

  • The δ Scuti pulsations of β Pictoris as observed by ASTEP from Antarctica
Aims: The Antarctica Search for Transiting Extrasolar Planets (ASTEP), an automatized 400 mm telescope located at Concordia station in Antarctica, monitored β Pictoris continuously to detect any variability linked to the transit of the Hill sphere of its planet β Pictoris b. The long observation sequence, from March to September 2017, combined with

  • The white dwarf binary pathways survey - II. Radial velocities of 1453 FGK stars with white dwarf companions from LAMOST DR 4
We present the second paper of a series of publications aiming at obtaining a better understanding regarding the nature of type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) progenitors by studying a large sample of detached F, G and K main-sequence stars in close orbits with white dwarf companions (i.e. WD+FGK binaries). We employ the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre
