An international group of astronomers has found an overcontact binary system which is the most massive and hottest known so far, using the VLT (Very Large Telescope) of ESO (European Southern Observatory) in Chile. The system, named VFTS 352 is in the Tarantula Nebula.

La película, para su proyección en cúpulas y planetarios, ha sido producida por el CETA-CIEMAT, IAC y Eurocosmos como resultado de un proyecto de divulgación científica financiado por la FECYT. “El Mundo Anillo. Viaje a un exoplaneta” pretende despertar la curiosidad del público y que éste pueda entender las condiciones que deben darse para la existencia de agua líquida y de vida orgánica en otros planetas. La película será distribuida gratuitamente entre aquellos planetarios y asociaciones astronómicas de España y América Latina que lo soliciten.

El pasado 7 de octubre, en Tenerife, el FREMAP (Mutua de Accidentes de Trabajo y Enfermedades Profesionales) hizo entrega del Premio “Empresa ejemplar en Prevención” entre sus mutualistas al Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), “en reconocimiento a su ejemplar labor en la reducción de la siniestralidad laboral y su compromiso para promover e integrar la seguridad y salud de su trabajadores”.

Thanks to an agreement between the SARA (Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy) consortium of universities in the United States and the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) the Jacobus Kapteyn Telescope (JKT), after a decade of inactivity, has been transformed into a telescope under remote control operation to be used for research, education, and outreach.

During the act the excellent level of scientific collaboration between Japan and Spain was highlighted. These two countries, together with Germany, are the main contributors to the LST consortium. The prototype LST (Large Size Telescope) of 23 m diameter, will be the biggest Cherenkov telescope in the northern hemisphere.
