Tomorow, 10th November, at 18:00 the Museum of Science and the Cosmos will offer, free, a lectura with the title “The Milky Way and its encounters with other galaxies. It will be given in Spanish by Teresa Antoja, an astrophysicist and Ramón y Cajal researcher at the Institute of Science of the Cosmos in the University of Barcelona (ICCUB).
The field of encounters between galaxies has been growing in importance in recent years. The European Space Agency (ESA), launched the Gaia mission some years ago, and this has provided a large amount of new information in the form of data which have given an impulse to many new studies of the Milky Way. From the data collected by Gaia it was discovered, among many other things, that our Galaxy received a strong perturbation from which it has still not recovered by now. The estudies indicate that this was caused by a near encounter with the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy.
The astrophysicist Teresa Antoja is a member of the Gaia mission team for analysing the data and scientific validation. During the lectura she will give tomorrow, this expert will talk about the several interactions between the Milky Way and other galaxies, which we know about from the Gaia mission. Dr. Antoja will analyse the traces which these interactions have left behind, and how they have modified the astonomical neighbourhood in which we live.
This public talk, will be free for all the public, until the hall is filled. It will be given in Spanish. The lecture is in the framework of the activies of the XXXIV Canary Islands Winter School of Astrophysics.
