Registration is now open for the training course "PETeR: Investigating the Universe with robotic telescopes", which will take place between 25 May and 3 June for teachers in the Canary Islands, and between 26 May and 10 June for teachers in the rest of Spain.
One of the main objectives of the Educational Project with Robotic Telescopes (PETeR) of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) is to train teachers and educators in astronomy and in the use of robotic telescopes as tools for students to develop their scientific and technological skills through guided research projects. In the coming weeks, two new online training courses will be offered within the framework of PETeR: one aimed at teachers in the Canary Islands, offered through the Canary Islands Regional Ministry of Education, Universities, Culture and Sports (CEUCD), and the other for teachers in the rest of Spain.
The aim of these training courses is for teachers to acquire technological skills in the use of robotic telescopes, astronomical image visualisation and analysis programmes and knowledge of how to carry out scientific projects in different areas of astronomy. These tools will allow them to work with their students on the curricular content from the inquiry-based learning approach, developing students' scientific thinking and problem-solving skills.
The training is aimed at teachers of Primary, Secondary, Vocational Training and Adult Education and will be given by the project coordinator, Nayra Rodríguez Eugenio, who has trained more than 800 teachers from Spain and other countries over the last six years.
Teachers in the Canary Islands
Through a close and active collaboration between the IAC and the STEAM Programme for the Promotion of Scientific Vocations and Creativity of the CEUCD (Government of the Canary Islands), teachers from the Canary Islands will have access, for the fourth consecutive year, to a training course on PETeR which, as last year, will be held entirely online, via videoconference and the CEUCD's Moodle platform. The course "PETeR: Investigating the Universe with robotic telescopes" will be held on 25 and 27 May, 1 and 3 June, from 16:00 to 19:00 (in the Canary Islands).
