  • A survey of faint, near-infrared sources towards the centre of the Galaxy
The authors present the results of a survey made at 1.65 μm (H) and 2.2 μm (K) in 15 small areas on the galactic equator between l = 0° and l = 10°. 775 distinct objects were counted in a total area of 0.17 deg2 to limiting magnitudes H = 10.5 and K = 9.5 (equivalent to detecting M giants at 6 - 7 kpc). Source confusion was the limiting factor in

  • Use of high resolution IUE spectra of MG 2 in cool stars to probe the local interstellar medium
It is shown that, given suitable radial velocity values for the stars and the local interstellar medium (LISM) interstellar absorption can be distinguished from chromospheric self absorption within the MgII emissions from late type stars. Beta Hyi (G2IV) offers a clear example. Zeta Tuc (G2V) and delta Pav (G8V) which are very close to beta Hyi

  • An upper limit to the Beryllium abundance in the population 2 star HD 140283 from a high resoluion IUE spectrum
An IUE archive spectrum of HD 140283 has been analyzed in the region of the 3131 Å 9Be II resonance doublet. Close comparison of the observed and synthetic spectra yields no measurable Be, and a conservative upper limit of 3×10-12 for 9Be, which is one fourth solar, can be set. With this star, and with a previous population II star HD 76932
