  • Observation of fine structure in the cold phase of the local interstellar medium using K I absorption
The K I 7699-A resonance absorption line was used to observe a group of 18 early-type stars within a 200-pc radius of the sun with a signal-to-noise ratio of 50-250. The interstellar absorptions provide a way to 'tag' a cloud via its radial velocity to within +/-1.5 km/s. Based on the hypothesis of pressure confinement, the temperatures of the

  • Monitoring of active galactic nuclei. I - The quasars 1302 - 102 and 1217 + 023
We present the results of a five-month spectroscopic monitoring campaign of two radio loud quasars, PKS 1217 + 023 and PKS 1302 - 102. There is a pronounced lack of variability in 1302 - 102 apart from a possible small change in the continuum level near the end of the monitoring period, but 1217 + 023 underwent a 20 percent continuum decrease in

  • Flexible design of high-speed readout electronics for astronomical detectors
Hardware design based on 20 MHz transputers, 120 ns first-in, first-out (FIFO) memory, and a 20 MHz counter is discussed. The two transputers are used to generate the states and to write them into the FIFO memory. The data generated by the transputers is written in the FIFO memory in parallel. The system design is characterized by a minimal state

  • First simultaneous UBVRI photopolarimetric observations of a sample of normal quasars
We present what we believe to be the first truly simultaneous UBVRI photopolarimetric results for a sample of eight 'normal' quasars. In five of these quasars we have not detected any measurable polarization, this result being consistent in some cases, but not necessarily in others, with the previous white light measurements of these quasars. 3C

  • Chromospheres of late-type active and quiescent dwarfs. III - Variability of CA II H emission profiles
We have used high-resolution spectra of the Ca II H resonance line in late-type dwarfs, obtained with high S:N ratios, over a period of four years to widen our understanding of the dynamical behavior of the Ca II emission cores. All of the stars dealt with in this article, which are chromospherically active, show variability both in core emission

  • CCD surface photometry of three low-luminosity radio galaxies containing radio jets
Results of CCD photometry of the three low-luminosity radio galaxies which contain jets at the kpc scale: B2 0836 + 29, B2 2116 + 26, and B2 2236 + 35 are presented and discussed. The photometric properties of the galaxies are examined by analyzing the radial variations of surface brightness, ellipticity, major axis position angle, and isophote
